A bit of an unusual blog this time: written by one of my business portrait photography clients, Jacquelyn Guderley, a mental health author and illustrator.
In her words: "I've written and illustrated a book, which is being published next year, and wanted some headshots that I felt would truly convey "Me," as I embark on (hopefully!) speaking gigs, book launches and the like."
I found Sarah Tulej through a friend of mine on LinkedIn and immediately was drawn to her work. For all the reasons I love what I'd seen of her photos of others, I love mine."
Jacquelyn booked a Simple Headshots session in London. Before the day of the session we discussed what she wanted from her photos - and if she had any concerns that I could support her with. The brief was to capture photos of her that showed her personality - in particular her fun side, authenticity, kindness and caring with a touch of quirkiness.
"They feel real, fun, lively and when I look at the photos I see so much of who I am in them!"
After choosing her final photos, Jacquelyn shared a few takeaways from the process on LinkedIn, that I thought would be useful to share on my blog if you're considering booking a business photography session:
1. Business portrait photography can feel like an (unnecessary) expense but...
Jacs said: "I feel so much more prepared - and confident! - to develop my speakers pack, update my website, and get ready to promote my book. It feels like such a valuable investment in myself and my work. What's more, I feel I've made the statement to myself that my work is important and is deserving of investing in."
2. It's important to choose a photographer whose style speaks to you
Jacs wrote: "I wasn't even looking for headshots when I came across Sarah on LinkedIn through a friend. Her work spoke to me, I connected with the subjects in her photos because they were so vibrant and real, and I felt utterly captivated. That's how I went from "not especially looking for a photographer" to "I want this person to take my photo asap!" If the photos don't speak to you, don't force it with a photographer."
3. Make it fun!
In Jac's words: "Sarah specialises in working with camera shy change makers. Her easy going but really supportive and encouraging energy made the whole process a joy - rather than nerve racking or uncomfortable, which I suppose posing in the middle of Shoreditch might have been! - and we definitely had a laugh.
From climbing over mounds of felled branches on the floor and having some banter with the tree feller, to moving lime bikes and setting off alarms, bumping into her sister in the street, and just having some all round great chats, it was such a pleasure. I love the photos but I enjoyed the whole experience and it'll be one I won't forget.
Here are my photos. If you know me, maybe you'll agree that they feel like a bit of me!"
