… was how vulnerable people are with you.
And the importance of being able to respond with care.
I’ve photographed hundreds of different people now. And, fairly regularly, someone will open up to me when we're planning their business headshots or personal branding photoshoot.
I’ve worked with people who:
… are expressing their gender differently for the first time on camera
… tell me about their experiences with depression, or chronic illness
… or about challenging relationships they’re dealing with
As well as more ‘obvious’ stuff - like sharing with me how they dislike their teeth, or tummy.
I’m no therapist, that’s for sure!
But sometimes I feel as though being able to bringing up difficult things, and then having a supportive, uplifting experience being photographed, can help people move through things a little.
That’s why I was so pleased to read Catherine’s words after our photoshoot:
"2024 was a year of great challenge for me in my professional life. This required me to “show up” - standing tall in the face of adversity and stress. And “being seen” - a willingness to be my authentic self, to shine a light on what I was experiencing.
"Sarah enabled me to have the courage as someone with several marginalised characteristics, to “show up” in front of the camera for a professional ‘head shot’ session in December. I am really happy with the photos that Sarah created, and look forward to using them so my true self can “be seen” in 2025 and beyond."
